The Artist

I was born and raised in Bergen, Norway. Right now I`m living in Bergen. I would like to emphasise the importance of my stay at New York Studio School in New York and the paintings I`ve done following that stay. The meeting with the school and the Dean Graham Nickson made a great impression on me. I am grateful to him for this influence.

The Art

I work process oriented, and I depend on form or shape arising within the oil paint. This allows experimentation and studies of formal possibilities. The paintings are substantial with paint applied in a rough way; using knives, brushes and scrapes. Spills, lumps and intensive application of paint release energy important for the expression. The project might collapse, and some paintings must be restarted. It’s a challenge to extract the most interesting parts and maintain them throughout the process of painting. A complex character of layers may arise, and layers beneath might shine through the surface. The paintings are processed from all angles, to make the gravitational force and the perspective change. A clear idea in the start could evaporate during the process. Abstract and objective forms arise and appear as one concept, like a conversation between the rational and the irrational.
